How can I analyze my bill of materials in a flattened view? Follow
A flattened Bill of Materials (BOM) combines like items in a single line and aggregates its quantity factoring in its usage in the BOM thereby providing users with an alternate view of the BOM to complete the action at hand with agility.
Depending on your organization's sourcing strategy, you may want to sometimes use a structured BOM and sometimes use a flattened BOM.
- Structured BOM provides a display of all parts that are directly or indirectly used in a parent item.
- Flattened BOM is a list of all parts from all levels listed together with total quantities.
Example: Flattened BOM vs. Structured BOM
As a general example, let's say you are building a skateboard and need to source all parts for assembly:
How might the bill of materials for a skateboard look different in both BOM types?
Structured BOM | Flattened BOM |
---|---|
Structured BOM provides a display of all parts that are directly or indirectly used in a parent item.
|
Flattened BOM is a list of all parts from all levels of the Structured BOM listed together with total quantities.

You may want to know the cost of the skateboard at a part level, you may want to analyze the transformation costs, you may want to seek secondary suppliers on specific components if you aren't satisfied with initial quotes. For different areas of your sourcing strategy, you may want to use either or both views of the BOM to drill down to the discrete level you need to make buying decisions.
Switch to Flattened BOM Type
- Within the NPI Dashboard, click into any Program:
- Within that Program, navigate to the NPI BOM Management tab and select latest BOM revision
- In the default Structured View of the BOM, you will see a structured hierarchy in the first column of the table that displays all parts in the BOM. You should also note the "structural" icon on the right of the interface which allows you to swap between Structured and Flattened View of the BOM.
- Important Note: For an existing BOM, check-out, save and check in a Structured BOM once before switching to Flattened BOM type. This will trigger the required computation of CPN usage in the Flattened BOM.
- When you switch to Flattened BOM view using the highlighted UI drop down, you can verify both with the presence of the new "Flattened" Icon in the navigation and the flattened stack of parts in the BOM Structure column of the table.
- You can then click down on any of the arrows adjacent to a line item in the BOM to expand it out when it is flattened/minimized.
- You can also hover over a row to see it highlighted in blue, and right click into it to add any of the following items - Sub-assemblies, Components, Sources, and Siblings - the availability of performing that type of addition action is the highlighted black text (available to add for that item) vs. the minimized grey text (not available to add for that item).
Edit Sourcing Attributes on Parts (from BOM)
- Within the NPI Dashboard, click into any Program:
- Within that Program, navigate to the BOM Management tab and select latest BOM revision
- Confirm that you have switched to Flattened BOM view by picking the item from the dropdown icon and checking that the BOM Structure column is flattened
- Then Check Out the BOM
- Change the part/source attributes you need to
- Save your changes
- Check In the BOM
Notes
- The user must be in Structured BOM View to make edits to the BOM Structure.
- Users can edit existing sourcing attributes on the part or Autofill them from PDM in both Structured or Flattened View.
- User can expand a CPN to see the MPN associated with CPN.
Export Flattened BOM
- Navigate to BOM Management
- Toggle to the Flattened View of the BOM
- Select Download BOM (the second Excel icon) and the user will receive an Excel Workbook organized in the Flattened BOM view.
Important Note: BOM Export will always respect your most recently saved grid view. If you (1) go to the columns to select or de-select data values, make sure you (2) save grid view after those changes, and then (3) export BOM.
