BOM Compare: Bill of Materials Ingestion Follow
BOM Compare (formerly known as New Product Introduction) can ingest a Bill of Materials (BOM) and enable multiple teams to work on a clean single version of the BOM. After creating a new program, the program manager can create a revision, and ingest the new or updated BOM. The structured BOM is displayed in a preview to the user, and can demonstrate errors, changes, omissions and verify the data to guarantee the BOM is clean and ready to be worked on further by subsequent users.
BOM Ingestion Process
BOM ingestion is done from inside a newly created program. After opening the program, click on the BOM management tab as shown here:
Once selected, click on [ADD A BOM] as shown below:
Ingestion is completed by clicking "select source" to ingest from an Excel file, or "BOM Copy" to replicate from an existing program
Once the source is defined, the system runs diagnostics on the BOM file. If any errors exist, they will be shown in a downloadable Excel diagnostics file. This file is very user-friendly allowing you to make changes easily.
Problem Scenarios and Error Messages
# | Problem Scenario | Error Message |
---|---|---|
1 | User loads another file format, instead of Excel | File format not supported. Please select an .xlsx file. |
2 | User loads an Excel with more than one sheet | Multiple sheets found in file. Please upload a file with a single sheet. |
3 | User loads an Excel with no rows | No data found. Please check input file. |
4 | User uploads an Excel with no 'Level' column | Data Error: 'Level' column not found. |
5 | User uploads an Excel with multiple Level 0 rows | Multiple Level 0 items found: Part Number/s {} |
6 | System error (Eureka / DB issues) | Oops, something went wrong... Please contact Customer Support. |
7 | User loads an Excel with duplicate Customer Part Numbers (CPNs) i.e. CPN occurs multiple times under the same Product - SA - CPN path | Duplicate CPNs found in same structure: Line number XXX, YYY |
Example Output of Scenario 7: Duplicate CPNs
A BOM preview is shown to the user for confirmation once successfully uploaded. Click [Save] in the top-right when satisfied.
Alternate Method to Add Parts to a BOM
When viewing the BOM from the BOM management tab, the BOM structure is collapsed to a CPN level. While in "check out" mode, by right clicking on the sub-assembly, a user can add a component. Or by clicking on the CPN the user can add a sibling. See both examples below:
Reverse Sync
When a BOM is uploaded, the parts included in the BOM are either:
- Already located within the Cognitive Sourcing Platform data
- Already part of the Parts Catalog
- Unique and new parts to the LevaData platform.
If the parts are unique and new parts, the user who is uploading the parts can now add them to the Parts Catalog automatically.
Once the user uploads the BOM, under BOM Management, the number of parts that are in Mass Production vs. Unique to NPI are identified when the user selects "FOUND NPI UNIQUE PARTS, CLICK HERE FOR ACTIONS" under the filter menu.
The user can now take either one of these actions:
- Excel: Export the Excel file for these parts, share with program team, modify Excel file and upload back into parts catalog manually.
- Add to Catalog: by selecting this option, the user is then automatically redirected into the parts catalog tab, the parts are automatically checked out and ready for check in, and the user can finalize the addition with a click on the button to Proceed.
Import Attributes from a Previous BOM Revision
Users can enrich their most recent BOM revision with cost and risk attributes via:
- Initiating a Request for Information (RFI)
- Automatically filling in parts information from the parts database
- Supplementing any final changes with manual editing
This is especially relevant if the source of prior data enrichment was user-entered data or updates from an RFX process. After the user concludes their standard phase of risk and cost analysis and uploads or ingests a new BOM revision with previously identified part attributes, they can be confident that the platform will automatically enrich these attributes in the newest BOM revision.
